Catalina Susana Garcia ‘lifts’ herself into the ethereal.Reputedly taken with no special camera equipment in Madrid Spain, July 1905.

You don’t need special equipment to achieve this, just a long exposure. In fact anyone can just go and try it themselves. Cameras back then could be exposed for as long as necessary as everything was manual and people often had to sit 2 minutes for a portrait (which I think is why everyone looks pissed on old picture haha). Let’s say the exposure for this picture in particular was 30 seconds long. She could have layed down for about 25 seconds to create a stable image of herself on the bed and then raised up for the last 5 seconds to create the ghostly image. It’s the first thing I learned in the first class of photography I ever took. No magic there, just photo 101.
Another possibility is that this is a double exposure, which would be the same principle, but taken in two shots over the same plate.
